Flying Sikh Milkha Singh to Miss Dasara Sports Meet

New Delhi (ABC Live):Flying Sikh Milkha Singh :The brouhaha over the arrival of Olympian Milkha Singh, to inaugurate the Dasara sports meet, fizzled out after Dasara sports subcommittee members announced here on Friday that the ‘Flying Sikh’ would not arrive on account of “health reasons.” The formal sports events would be inaugurated at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium here at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

President of the Dasara sports and adventure festival subcommittee M.S. Satyanarayana, addressing presspersons here on Friday, confirmed Mr. Singh’s absence.

Vikash Kumar Vikash, Director of Youth Empowerment and Sports, told presspersons that all sports events would be held on different grounds of the University of Mysore. The newly laid synthetic hockey turf at Chamundi Vihar Stadium would be thrown open for hockey competitions, as the process of certification by the FIH (International Hockey Federation) on its playability was underway, Mr. Kumar stated.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, district in-charge Minister V. Srinivas Prasad, and Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister K. Abhaya Chandra Jain are attending the inaugural function at Chamundi Vihar Stadium at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Sportspersons Tej Kumar, Harshad, Ponnamma and Prema Ramesh, would participate.

Hockey Olympian Ashok Kumar, son of the legendary Dhyan Chand, is attending the inauguration of an all-India invitational hockey tournament here from October 9 to 12. An all-India invitational floodlight volleyball and basketball tournaments will be held during the same period.

The sports torch will begin its sojourn from Chamundi Hills at 7 a.m. on October 5, after the customary puja at the temple. Torch-bearers would carry it along the main streets of the city, passing Nimbujadevi Temple in Nazarbad in the afternoon. Its journey will end at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium at 4 p.m.

The adventure sports competitions (including bicycling, air adventure shows and water sports) scheduled to begin on October 5 would be held at Chamundi Hills, Mandakalli Airport, KRS backwaters and Rajkumar Park. Chess competitions for the blind are also being organised.

Bicycle polo competitions are being held in the men’s and women’s categories at the village hostel in Manasagangotri on October 6 and 7. Bicycling competitions in both categories would be held on October 8, covering a distance of 80 km from Mysore to K.R. Nagar and back. Women would have to cover 40 km from Mysore to Bilikere and back, Mr. Vikash added.

The Dasara half-marathon, covering 21.1 km, will be held on October 6. ‘Best physique’ competitions for men in different weight categories would also be held on October 6 at 7 p.m.; competitions involving height category would be held on the next day.

Mr. Vikash said that senior sportspersons who had brought laurels to the State such as Hemalatha (hockey Olympian), N. Narasimhaiah (football) and Srinivasaraj Urs (ball badminton) would be honoured on the occasion.
