To develop new genetic strains and evolve the most effective agricultural practices, much climatic information is required. This relates not only to rainfall and atmospheric temperature, humidity, etc. but also to radiation, evaporation and soil moisture. General meteorological observations were commenced in India in the second half of the nineteenth century. During the last three to four decades agro meteorological observations have been recorded all over the country. Sufficient data had become available for presenting the Agroclimatic information in the form of an Atlas.

The Agricultural Meteorology Division of the India Meteorological Department published first edition of Agroclimatic Atlas of India in the year 1978. This Atlas was found very useful in research work and hence it was demanded by most of the agricultural research institutions in India and abroad. Because of its large size, it is more suited for reference in library. It was, therefore decided to bring out a compact sized and cheaper edition of the 1978 Atlas without altering its contents. With this edition, it is hoped that needs of individual scientists and research students would be met.
