Chandrapur (ABC Live): India’s most regarded social worker Baba Amte died in his 'Anandvan' ashram in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district in the wee hours today.

Chandrapur (ABC Live): India’s most regarded social worker Baba Amte died in his 'Anandvan' ashram in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district in the wee hours today. Baba Amte was born on 26 december 1914 inHinganghat’ located in Wardha District of Maharashtra.

Baba has devoted his all life for leprosy patients, even allowing his body to be used for experiments to grow leprosy germs. Baba Amte stated ‘Bharat Jodo’ movement for peace and awareness in 1985 and 1988 from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh.

He was honored with many awards including Padma Shree, 1971, Padma Vibhushan, 1986, Welfare of the Disabled, 1986, Gandhi Peace Prize, 1999 and also he was He was chosen for Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1985 for his work-oriented rehabilitation of Indian leprosy patients and other handicapped outcasts.

A Gandhian who worked hard to uphold Gandhian values in their true spirit told ABC Live "It is with a deep sense of grief and loss that I heard the demise of Baba Amte.

The Prime Minister in his condolence message described Amte as a "legend", and said the Gandhi Peace Prize winner's work in the upliftment of leprosy patients puts him in a "unique class of great national figures".
